What Are V2Ray Smart Routing and Automatic Server Selection?

When you open a website, the client may connect directly or send the request through a proxy. If several proxy servers are available, it can also choose one. Interfaces often group these features under “smart connection,” but they answer two separate questions: which path should this request take, and which server should it use when taking the proxy path?

Smart Routing: First Choose the Path

Think of smart routing as signs at a junction. V2Ray can direct requests to a direct connection, a proxy, or another outbound using rules for domains and IP addresses. A local banking site might connect directly, an overseas reference site through a proxy, and your home printer stay on the local network.

Rules are checked in order, and the matching rule determines the destination. The client must first capture the relevant traffic before rules can affect a browser or other app. “Smart routing” therefore means assigning requests to paths, not automatically discovering new servers.

Automatic Selection: Then Choose the Server

Once a request is assigned to the proxy path, multiple available servers allow a second step. The client can check their connectivity and response times, then choose an outbound according to its strategy. V2Ray load balancing can choose randomly or use probe records to select a faster-responding server.

Routing decides whether a request uses the proxy; automatic selection chooses a server from those available. The displayed “latency” is the response time of a probe. Video and download speeds also depend on route bandwidth and the destination website's response.

How Do They Work Together?

Suppose you're checking a local bank account while opening an overseas reference site. Routing rules send the bank directly and the reference site to a proxy group. Automatic selection then picks a server from that group. Traffic routing and server selection perform their tasks in sequence.

Server status changes and probe results are updated. During use, the client can use new results to adjust the outbound for subsequent connections. Rules choose the direction; probing and selection choose the specific server. Together, this is V2Ray smart routing and automatic server selection.
